NORTH KOREA: University Teaches Market Economy in DPRK

A Korea-born American who heads Pyongyang's only private university is trying to teach students in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea about market economies.The Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, co-founded by Park Chan-mo, is teaching dozens of DPRK citizens about modern market economies, something the state has managed for decades to avoid.
JORDAN: National Strategy Aims to Reduce University Enrolment

Reducing the number of students attending four-year universities and redirecting them to technical and vocational education is the main goal of the National Higher Education Strategy, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Wajih Owais said last week, reports The Jordan Times.“The majority of Tawjihi [school] graduates in Jordan want to join universities regardless of the subjects they study or the potential for finding job opportunities after graduation,” Owais told The Jordan Times in an interview last Sunday, adding that although the job market is saturated with graduates from many four-year degree programmes, "people insist on joining universities".
PAKISTAN: Lack of Funds Places Universities on Verge of Bankruptcy

The chair of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr Javaid Laghari, warned last week that universities are about to go bankrupt due to shortages of funds, reports the Pakistan Observer.He was delivering a presentation at a meeting of the National Assembly standing committee on professional and technical training. Laghari stated that the HEC has not received funding from the Ministry of Finance for the past four months.
PAKISTAN: Regulators in Spat Over Non-medical PhD Teachers

The issue of whether non-medical PhD degree holders should be hired for teaching basic medical sciences subjects at public medical institutions in Pakistan has become a tug-of-war between the country’s two top regulatory bodies.The Higher Education Commission (HEC) had floated the idea of hiring non-medical PhD teachers in basic medical sciences to cover the countrywide dearth of PhDs with a MBBS background. But the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council turned down the suggestion on the grounds that such professionals were irrelevant to the medical field.
Graziadio School of Business Joins Online Market

CHINA: More Disadvantaged Students to be Enrolled in College

Some 570 Chinese universities and colleges have promised to enroll a total of 10,000 more students from the country's 14 least developed areas in central, southwest and northwest China this year. This is the first time for China's universities to offer privileged admission to students from poverty stricken areas. This gives disadvantaged students a better opportunity to realize their university dream.
USA: Indiana School of Philanthropy would be a First for U.S.

Recognizing the increasing role of non-profit organizations in today's economy, Indiana University is poised to launch the nation's first School of Philanthropy. The university already is a leader in philanthropic studies. The nationally renowned research-based Center on Philanthropy is based at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. The university also offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in philanthropic studies through the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.And now, with a growing market for non-profit workers, university officials say the time has come for a formal school at IUPUI. If the university receives state approval this year, as is expected, classes could begin in the 2013-14 academic year.
CHINA: Work Abounds for Students Majoring in Environment

Students studying environmental sciences enjoy increasing employment opportunities in China, according to a recent survey.Environmental ecology undergraduate students had an employment rate as high as 94.3 percent in 2011, marking the third consecutive year of surging employment, according to the Chinese College Graduates' Employment Annual Report 2012.The employment rate of environmental ecology undergraduates ranks sixth among the most sought-after majors, followed by power and energy, geology and mining engineering, nursing, civil engineering and agricultural engineering.
UK: Distance Learning Degrees are on the Iincrease

Recently the Higher Education Academy reported on the outcomes of eight flexible learning pathfinder projects, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, which found that employers favoured distance learning as a way of delivering career-related study.Such distance-learning degrees, which are often designed to appeal to mid-career professionals looking to develop their roles in specific sectors, such as banking, law, finance and nursing, are a growth area for many universities.Dan Hiskey, who is a corporate banking analyst for HSBC, has just graduated with a BSc in banking practice and management studied by distance learning at a private university, ifs School of Finance.

Generation Y Fails to Use Blog-standard Tools

Few PhD students explore new technologies in their research or understand the range of information available to them, a report commissioned by the British Library and higher education technology body Jisc has found.Researchers of Tomorrow, published on 28 June, surveyed more than 17,000 PhD students over three years, following 60 in depth and looking in particular at those born between 1982 and 1994, the so-called Generation Y.It states that despite being technologically savvy, Generation Y doctoral students know little about the range and authenticity of research information available in new formats such as online databases, e-journals and repositories, and few know how to access it.
USA: Colleges' Efforts to Internationalize Slip in Some Areas

American colleges say they are more supportive than ever of international education, but in many cases their efforts to internationalize may fall short, a new report from the American Council on Education suggests.Half of all colleges surveyed said they include international or global education in their institutional mission statements, while a like number reported internationalization among their top five strategic priorities. A majority said internationalization efforts on their campuses had accelerated in recent years.
USA: Findings Give Boost to Online Classes

The burgeoning movement to put more college classes online, which attracted the support of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology earlier this month, is getting another endorsement, which may have an even greater impact: rigorous evidence that the computer can be as effective as the classroom.A new study compared two versions of an introductory statistics course, one taught face-to-face by professors and one mostly taught online with only an hour a week of 'face time'. Researchers found students fared equally well in both formats on every measure of learning. The only difference was that the online group appeared to learn faster.
UK: Path to University Title Smoothed as Threshold Lowered to 1,000 Students

The UK government is set to push ahead with plans to create a new generation of universities by lowering the qualifying threshold for 'university' title from 4,000 to 1,000 students. Easing the path to university title for small institutions is expected to be a central feature in the government's responses to consultations on last year's Higher Education White Paper.

South Sudan Shuts Down All Private Universities

South Sudan has ordered all private universities in the new country to close, saying they are not operating up to government standards, reports AllAfrica.com. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology said the decision was the result of a study that looked at the qualifications of instructors and administrators and whether the institutions had sufficient number of lecture rooms and recreational facilities.
‘New York University’ Is Added to China’s List of Banned Internet Search Terms

China’s Internet censors have added “New York University” to their list of blocked search terms, reports China Digital Times. Last week, NYU’s law school offered the blind civil-rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng a visiting-scholar position. Previously, Mr. Chen had taken refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing after escaping from house arrest. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused American officials of interfering in China’s domestic affairs.
Indian Panel Slams Efforts to Build New Elite Engineering and Science Schools

The effort to open new Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research is faltering, says a Parliamentary committee that oversees the education ministry, reports The Times of India. With a faculty shortage as high as 60 percent at some of the new branches, in a report the committee has asked the ministry to ensure such gaps are closed quickly.
INDIA: Government Bans Use of Live Animals for Education and in Research

The Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) has banned the use of live animals in dissection and other experiments in educational and research institutions. But scientists conducting new molecular research will be exempted from the ban.Based on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960), the MoEF has issued guidelines to the University Grants Commission, ministry of health and family welfare, Pharmacy Council of India and the Medical Council of India to discontinue dissection and experiments with live animals in universities, colleges, research institutes, hospitals, laboratories and instead use alternatives like computer simulation.
New EMBA Programme at Columbia Business School

Columbia Business School is to launch a new executive MBA called EMBA – Americas. The 20-month programme includes three semesters of core courses and two of electives. Most teaching will be delivered on Columbia's New York campus, with some also offered in California and Latin America. Applications for the programme open on July 1st; the first class will be in January 2013.
