The Higher Education Commission plans to set up five new universities and 36 campuses besides upgrading nine existing institutions into fully-fledged university campuses across the country, writes Riazul Haq for The Express Tribune.The ambitious plan, which integrates the government’s vision of maximum area coverage in terms of higher education at district and provincial levels, will materialise in the next three years, Higher Education Commission documents outline.
MOROCCO: Arts Graduates are a Burden – Minister

Lahcen Daoudi, the minister of higher education, said earlier this month in Rabat that holders of a BA in arts and humanities will be a burden on their families and on the community, writes Larbi Arbaoui for Morocco World News.During his speech at the inauguration of the new branch of professional baccalaureate in Rabat, the minister said that many arts and humanities graduates go back home with “no practical knowledge” that will help them find work. According to the minister, this problem is mainly caused by “the gap between education and the labour market demands”, leading the students to become unemployed and “a burden on society”.

The latest victims of Greece’s crisis have been students and academics who have lost access to electronic journals, a vital source to continue their research and studies, due to non-payment, writes Anastasios Papapostolou for the Greek Reporter.The Hellenic Academic Libraries Link, or HEAL-Link, the internet portal that provides scientists in many Greek universities and research institutes with access to electronic journals, did not pay the subscription to its 27 publishers that provide those texts.

A government service exposing fake, online universities has identified 190 bogus institutions selling qualifications as part of a multi-million pound industry, writes Callum Paton for International Business Times.The Higher Education Degree Datacheck, commissioned by the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, has discovered institutions such as the “University of Wolverhamton” (the “p” is missing) and Manchester University (University of Manchester is genuine) passing off degrees to unsuspecting students and willing fraudsters.
THAILAND: New Regional Timetable Overlooks Climatic Differences

Lecturers from universities across Thailand have called for the government to forget about unity within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, and bring back the old academic timetable which keeps Thai universities closed during the hot season, writes Terry Fredrickson for Bangkok Post.In anticipation of the ASEAN Economic Community, Thailand recently changed its university semester dates to match other countries in ASEAN. Under the new timetable, the first semester runs from August to December and the second semester from January to May. Universities are closed from June to July, rather than April and May, the hottest months.
United Kingdom: Last All-male Oxford College Opens Doors to Women

Oxford University's last remaining single-sex college will open its doors to women undergraduates following a recent vote, making it the last of the university's institutions to do so.Oxford traces its history to the 11th century and boasts British Prime Minister David Cameron and former US president Bill Clinton as alumni. The last all-female college went mixed in 2008.
VENEZUELA: Professors on $30 a Month Flee Abroad for Better Jobs

CHINA: Universities Face Rising Survival Crisis

Despite the huge army of high school seniors pursuing higher education, Chinese universities face a growing survival crisis after decades of explosive expansion as the number of students taking what is generally considered the single most important test any Chinese person can take, the gaokao, has fallen for five straight years since 2009, reports Xinhua.The number of test-takers peaked at 10.5 million in 2008. This year, about 9.42 million Chinese high school graduates, slightly less than the population of Sweden, were to sit for the famously stressful college entrance examination earlier this month.

A brief review of main works and achievements of Leon Serge Theremin is presented, outstanding Soviet inventor, creator of the world's first musical instrument - Aetherphon, rhythmicon, terpsiton. They also de-veloped the world's first mechanical television system the large-interlaced scanning mirror, a number of burglar alarms and devices for special purposes. The information about the pedigree Theremin, the interesting facts of his life and work, including details of his schooling, culture amateur radio, military service, uni-versity education, works at the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute, touring performances in Europe and the U.S., as well as features use his instrument and apparatus for intruder alarm. Theremin described contacts with famous composers, artists, scientists, the specificity of its intelligence activities, work in the im-prisonment and life in recent years.
