KENYA: Mathematics computer program enhances learning in Kenya

22.05.2011
NAIROBI - The young boy studying at a secondary school in Nairobi, Kenya clicks a button to open a program on a computer.

He waits keenly as the program loads up before giving the computer another instruction. Soon, he picks a textbook and starts working mathematical problems on the computer. He types a quadratic equation and uses the program to solve it.

After completing the task, he draws a triangle using the program and starts to solve its various properties. In mathematics, the topic is known as trigonometry.

The boy smiles as he completes the exercise in about two minutes. "It would have taken me about 20 minutes to complete solving the mathematical problems if I was doing them manually," he says with a broad smile.

The boy and other students in various schools and colleges in Kenya and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa can now perform mathematical and science problems faster and accurately, thanks to the computer program known as Microsoft Mathematics.

The students in various learning institutions are now embracing the program launched recently as they use technology to facilitate learning. "The program empowers students to engage with potentially intimidating problems, giving them tools not only to arrive at the right answers, but to understand how they got there," says Alex Nyingi, Academic Programs Manager at Microsoft East and Southern Africa.
